I liked how the Economist puts it (I think the link is free): “Constraints on individuals’ rights to choose their beliefs are usually backed up by claims that religions are somehow “under threat”: a curious lack of faith—in faith itself.” More insultingly:

“Apostasy is within the powers of the Islamic law and the Sharia courts. Civil courts cannot interfere. In short, she cannot, at her own whim, simply enter or leave her religion … She must follow rules,” said Chief Justice Ahmad Fairuz. (emphasis mine)

Lost her job, disowned by her family, ran from the country, nine years of court cases–that’s some whim.
