Petrol Patrol

Posted in Uncategorized on 30 May 2008 by rajanr

The biggest news around these parts (Singapore) seem to be that across the Causeway, you have to drive some 50km out to get petrol legally. The problem is that Singaporeans pay more than double the price of petrol in their lovely little, highly taxed, city-state (the Thais pay almost double).

Rather than limiting subsidies to Malaysian vehicles–or better yet, getting rid of it–the government took a broad swipe and ban the sale altogether to foreign-registered vehicles (if you’re wondering why this is limited to Malaya, Indonesia and Brunei, which borders, Sabah and Sarawak highly subsidizes fuel too).

Consider you’re a Singaporean driver taking a trip to Johore. You’re already required to have 3/4 of your tank full prior crossing the border – so you’re not exactly there to fill up the tank (customs at the Thai-Malaysian border could easily require that for Thai vehicles).

But what happen if you run out of petrol while in Johor? Sucks to be you.

While on the same note, I remember once Anwar Ibrahim, next in line for Prime Ministership it would seem, boasting about his ability to keep petrol prices low during the hey day of booming economy and low, global fuel prices. I don’t know about you, but I think that strikes against him even more so – he had an opportunity to dismantle the subsidy system with less immediate externalities, but instead, he deepened it.

Mac?

A few months ago, I compared prices between Mac laptops and comparable PC ones. Pretty much the same price – and then there’s OS X. But now that my laptop is dead, I checked it out again.

Oh. My. God. The difference is stark. For example, if I get a MacBook Pro instead of a Dell XPS, I’m giving up a Blu-Ray drive for a “SuperDrive” (DVD-RW), getting 3GB of RAM for 2GB, 320GB hard disk for a 200GB one, and the list goes on. The only remaining advantage of the Mac is OS X and Multitouch.

Is OS X worth it? (Multitouch sure isn’t)

Having conditioned myself to the idea of buying a Mac for God knows so long, I dread giving that up for a cheaper Windows laptop. Yet on the other hand, if I buy a Mac, I would have this nagging sensation that I bought something overprice. Either way I lose.

Stupid Apple.

On totalitarian states and natural disasters

Last Sunday, while I was at the Ong’s, I heard about a cyclone in Burma – their father works there, and was wondering if stories appeared on the Straits Times. Well, it did, like four days after. I’m not sure this is indicative of the responsiveness of the press, or more likely, how Burma is shut out of the world.

As Southeast Asia’s poorest (by far) country, you would think that the Burmese government would want to put out news of a natural disaster externally as soon as possible – to get aid. In any case, with 22,500 confirmed deaths (I’m weighing more with the American estimate of 100,000), it doesn’t look good on the junta: this is the same Buddhist junta that is ruled by omens. Asia’s worst (and deathliest) cyclone since 1991 – not exactly the best of omens.

Wake-up call

Sometimes the most unlikely of people shows you what’s important in life. I’m heading in the wrong direction at break-neck speed – and I have no idea what to do about it. Wished life had a pause button. Wished I could have my cake and eat it too. Hmmm cake. Cheesecake. Secret Recipe. Secrets. Oh god, what’s with my mind!

‘Elite’ economist

So what happens when you can’t even find one economist to support your stupid gas tax plan? Call them elite. Clinton may well call to build a mile-high tower, told by engineers and architects to be impossible, and then call them elite. They don’t care what average Americans want!
